As the new work emerges from the shadows I reflect on the last firing. I want to explore how the ridges in the pieces form niches for the ash to settle and collect. I love this. Making for the atmosphere wood fire brings feels right 💫

So, for those following along this was the third news item. It’s an ash blower. WIP for introducing fine ash in our new wood kiln. Made of 3D printed couplings and ash drawer, a mortar gun with the screw removed, curtain pole and hairdryer. This test was with fireplace ash but I’ll sieve it very fine for a firing. More ash escaping than I hoped but it’s better than what happened on the last firing where more filled the air than the kiln 😅 The ash alone on raw clay is fantastic but also the interaction with the glaze also something special. What do you think?!

If you read my last post (thanks if you did) this is news item 2 of 3. Woooooo I was selected to feature in @valentineclays calendar for 2026. I’m March. My motivational message is from the heart, and I’m continually surprised how clay brings us together, you’re reading this, it’s true! With many thanks to @valentineclays for the selection but also to the clays they produce and especially V9G that has been my rock (literally) for bigger wares. Switching to this reduced a 50% failure rate to 0%. About 150 pieces in this first firing. In the second photo you can see ash accumulation in the throwing lines which have made a return on which it can settle. Ash was introduced during the firing and the natural fiiery draught directs its passage. This ash delivers magic in the form of a sheen in the clay body, patches of speckled areas, fluxes glaze and comet tails around wadding 🔥👌

Super pleased with first firing. Individual pot photos will come in the days ahead. Much more even than I expected and rich colors on clay bodies indicating a good level of reduction. Ash deposits also fairly evenly spread and a few focal points for the ash. The clean kiln reveals the ash and flame path in a unique way from which we can learn a lot. A very good start indeed. Sat here with a warm glow. The kiln is pretty toasty too at around 1279 currently and quite manageable. All cones to front are down, top back spy hole is jammed so who knows what’s going on there. Got a good feeling about this one

Got a hot date on Sunday 😉 first fire in a new build. Testing out White St Thomas, Reduction St Thomas, ES80 with wild clay sprayed slip (Eocene epoch material complete with fossils!) and Staffordshire Stoneware. The pink grogged will have to be for next time. Going with simple glaze application with more raw clay body showing. Tenmoku, celadon, shino, Kwai celadon, and a couple of combinations. Focused a little more on curation in the making this time, quite a number haven’t made the cut. Prep and load tomorrow, fire on Sunday. Embracing the childish excitement but please let me sleep Sat night 🤣

#kilnbuilding in progress. It’s been brewing for a long time after all the learnings since around 2018 wood firing with @oxfordkilns enabled by @robin.a.wilson . This has been an amazing inspiration and continues to offer rich education into the art. It’s the right time for me to get really in tune with the wood firing cycle, the kiln, and the wood firing dynamic The roof is complete as of today and a tangible milestone, the kiln is arguably an easier build prospect! The process of the build is in itself a great experience, @robinwaldenceramics is a patient, kind, determined individual and there is no way on earth this would have got even this far without him. Also with thanks to Ollie for your labour over the last few stints. Also to @charlespark5151 for the opportunity - looking forward to first fire excitement and what we can all achieve together 🤩 feeling inspired and grateful to those involved

You don’t often get to see your artworks in situ

You don’t often get to see your artworks in situ, after someone has made the choice to commit to the work. So pleased with how these pieces soften the architectural lines in the garden and add an artisan touch. It was also like visiting familiar friends having spent so much time in the making process. Loved it. Deep respect to those enjoying the pieces and how the light, seasons and weather alter the aesthetic and bring a new beauty to the pieces. #jarrealacorde
